In this inspiring interview, Charmaine Sky (Cook), a certified drone pilot, reveals her passion for capturing the world's beauty from high altitudes. She shares her favorite shots, how she started in drone flying, exciting milestones, and advice for aspiring women in the field. Discover her breathtaking journey!
Today, we had the pleasure of speaking with Charmaine Sky, a talented drone pilot who captures breathtaking views of the world from above. Her unique perspective comes through the lens of a camera mounted on a small aircraft, giving us glimpses of landscapes that few get to see firsthand.
When asked about her favorite footage to capture, Charmaine enthusiastically replied, “My favorite shot has to be the mountains at sunset. I recently got a shot from Fort Mountain, GA, and the views were absolutely breathtaking.”
Curious about how she got started with drones, I asked about her journey into aerial photography. She shared, “I started flying drones back in 2022. My Instagram at the time was all about travel, and I wanted to capture aerial images of the places I visited. So, I bought my first DJI drone as a birthday gift to myself and started practicing.”
I then asked Charmaine if she thought flying a drone gave her a different perspective on the world. She reflected, “Flying drones has really changed how I see the world. It’s made me realize how vast and beautiful Earth is. When you understand that, your problems seem so small and insignificant. The world is truly magnificent.”
We then dove into collaborations. I asked if she had worked with any companies or artists. She excitedly revealed, “I haven’t done collaborations yet, but I was featured on DJI’s YouTube page after one of my Instagram reels hit 2.1 million views. That was huge for me! Also, Jvke, the artist, commented on one of my reels where I used his song, and I was so stoked!”
Intrigued by her passion for drones, I asked what she enjoyed most about using them. “It’s the aerial images. Drones let us see more than any phone or regular camera can. Plus, I love learning about the different ways drones are used — like in dangerous situations where humans can’t reach, or by police departments for rescue missions. There’s so much more to drones than people realize.”
When asked about her dream collaboration, Charmaine didn’t hesitate: “DJI, without a doubt. They make the best quality drones, and working with them would be a dream.”
I wrapped up by asking what advice she had for young women interested in drones, and she gave a powerful message: “Go for it! You’ll be amazed at the images you’ll capture.”
Lastly, I asked about an inspiring message she’s received. Charmaine smiled as she recalled, “A follower once told me, ‘You should create a YouTube channel, your gift will make room for you.’ That message gave me the push I needed to finally start my YouTube channel, and I’m so grateful for my followers.”
As we concluded the interview, I asked if she had a dream artist she’d love to collaborate with for a music video. Charmaine lit up and said, “Madison Calley, the harpist. She has such a unique vibe, and I think we could create something amazing together.”
Charmaine closed with a piece of advice to her younger self: “Trust the process, be patient, and get a better drone, haha! My first one wasn’t great in terms of image quality, but upgrading to the DJI Mini 4 Pro made all the difference.”
