Q1: When did that first spark of music ignite for you? Was there a moment, a memory, or a revelation that made you feel music was your calling?

Brett: “When I was 4 years old, I saw a commercial on TV for a push-button guitar, and I can remember the whole world getting blurry except that guitar. I begged my parents for it, but then quickly realized it was more of a 'toy' than a real guitar. From there, I got a cheap 6-string from Toys 'R' Us and have been writing songs ever since. I was the kid who would take apart stereo equipment and rebuild it to record when I was 8 years old. I suppose, in some ways, I’ve always known.”

Q2: Port Townsend and Bremerton have such unique characters—how do you think growing up there shaped your music? And where has life taken you since?

Brett: “I grew up in a beautiful town on the water called Port Townsend, WA, although I was born in Bremerton, WA. I've spent time traveling quite a bit as an adult. Lived in Asia, Europe, New York, LA, etc., and for the past several years, I've been traveling full-time and working remotely as a producer & artist.”

Q3: What are the sounds, artists, or even moments in music that you feel have left an indelible mark on your own style?

Brett: “Absolutely! Tons. Stevie Wonder, The National, Dredg, Tiesto, early U2, EJ Tackett, Devotchka, and so many more. I think you can hear elements of early U2 on the album.”

Q4: Has anyone ever drawn a comparison between your music and another artist? How does that resonate with you?

Brett: “Vocally, when I was younger, people compared me to Maynard from Tool (when I was singing more rock), and funny enough, Tracy Chapman (the baritone female singer), both of which I’m honored by, but don’t necessarily hear. On a side note, people do say I look like ‘a young Brendon Fraser,’ haha... but that has nothing to do with my music.”

Q5: Your work seems to blend so many genres and sounds. What about this fusion inspires you most, and where does it take you creatively?

Brett: “I think the combo of so many real instruments (I played real drums, bass, piano, guitar, synth, etc. on the record) mixed with a modern sound is inspiring. Also, to be honest, I’m super happy that the record is so HONEST. Wasn’t trying to impress anyone here with my personal life choices... mainly just wanted to share & connect.”

Q6: You've described songwriting as a spiritual channeling experience. Could you talk about how this process unfolds for you? Do songs ever feel like messages from beyond?

Brett: “I think sometimes you ‘channel’ great songs. It’s such an awesome experience that many writers share. I’m a spiritual person, so I credit some supernatural stuff for some songs coming through. For me, making sure your craft is well-sharpened and you are ready to MANIFEST the spirit into form is key.”

Q7: If any artist—living or from the past—could put their own spin on one of your songs, who would it be, and what do you think they’d bring to it?

Brett: “Wow, well, it would be an absolute honor to hear Bono sing ‘Loved You Better’ or ‘To the Ones We’ve Lost,’ which is a currently unreleased song from the album.”

Q8: Imagine sharing a stage with a legendary act—who would it be, and what do you think the energy between you and their fans would be like?

Brett: “Wow... also a great question. I’d say U2. I think there are many others, but opening for a legendary band like that, knowing that their music has inspired me so much, would be so powerful. They have an older audience, I’d assume, but I’m sure their fans could appreciate my stuff as well. Bonus artists that would be cool to tour with: Lana Del Rey, The National, One Republic, Coldplay, Devotchka.”

Q9: Right now, what’s the one song from another artist that you can’t stop listening to? What resonates with you about it?

Brett: “All the Sand in All the Sea by DEVOTCHKA. It’s so passionate and has such an incredible production, lyrics, melodies, vocals, instruments, orchestra, etc. It’s on fire. I’m on fire for IT!”

Q10: Your favorite song from your upcoming album is “YOMI”—it sounds incredibly personal. What do you feel this song allowed you to say that’s been waiting for the right moment?

Brett: “It’s a song that I don’t necessarily think will be everyone else’s favorite because it’s so deeply personal and kind of heavy.”

Q11: Red Rocks and Japan—two dreams that feel worlds apart. What does each of these goals mean to you, and why are they on your horizon?

Brett: “Playing Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and doing a tour in Japan have been on my mind for a long time.”

Q12: If you could leave your fans with one piece of advice about life or music, what would you want them to remember?

Brett: “You can do almost anything you set your mind & heart to. Life’s too short to follow ONLY the almighty dollar. So make sure you make a living from something you love... I’ve been fortunate to be successful in many different industries, but in the end, it’s about the passion & the craft & the people.”
